Preserving Cultural Heritage Through AI Restoration

By Museum Curator David LinFebruary 20, 2026

We are using AI to fill in the missing pieces of ancient frescoes and to restore colors to faded paintings from centuries ago. The models analyze the artist's style and the surrounding context to make educated guesses about what was there.

This is controversial. Are we restoring art or creating new fakes? We have to be very transparent about what is original and what is generated. But it allows the public to see these works as they were intended, not as time has left them.

AI is a time machine, helping us look back and preserve what we would otherwise lose.
